The Difference Of Horizontal And Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

May.09.2024

Our company's wind turbine are divided into horizontal axis and vertical axis. For customers who have not been paying attention to wind turbine for a long time, they don't know how to choose the one that suits them.

Horizontal and vertical axis wind turbine use different motors. So please allow me do a simple science popularization on motors.

The horizontal axis wind turbine has an inner rotor motor, and the vertical axis has an outer rotor motor or a disc coreless generator.

The main difference between the three is actually the structure. The coil of the inner rotor motor is fixed on the casing, so heat can be quickly transferred through the casing, and the coil heat dissipation is better.

On the contrary, the outer rotor motor has magnets glued to the casing, and the magnets dissipate heat better.

The disc coreless generator has magnets stuck to the upper and lower shells, with the coil in the middle. The coil is fixed on the main shaft in the middle and does not rotate.

On the contrary, the outer rotor motor has large torque, so the speed is relatively low and the moment of inertia is large. Through these, it is easy to understand why the vertical axis wind turbine is basically an external rotor motor or disc coreless generator. To achieve high torque at high speed, only the outer rotor motor can be selected.

The advantage of disc coreless generator is that it is easy to start, and the maximum power of this type vertical wind turbine is about 30kw.

All in all, for home users, if the annual average wind speed is around 5m/s, I would recommend a vertical wind turbine composed of a disc coreless generator.

This is also our company's main promotion. Due to its low noise, gentle breeze, and beautiful appearance, it is particularly popular in the European market.
